Never heard of HYROX? Let us introduce you to a fitness race that is getting more and more popular every year. Billed as the “sport for everybody,” the HYROX race is geared toward both professional athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts looking to take their training to the next level.
Here's how it works: All athletes compete on the same course in an indoor arena, and can take part as an individual in the open or pro division, on a team of two, or on a relay team. The race format is the same regardless of location—eight different functional fitness movements, followed by a 1k run after each movement is completed. We are proud to say the Concept2 RowErg and SKiErg are included in this challenging race. Both the SkiErg and RowErg come standard with the PM5 Performance Monitor (PM5) and engineered so that workout data is comparable for every workout.
HYROX founder Christian Tötzke explains why the Concept2 RowErg and SkiErg are used in HYROX competition. “Concept2 equipment is the best. The RowErg and SkiErg are the most reliable machines in the world. And most importantly, any performance on a Concept2 erg, with regards to time and athletic effort, is 100% comparable. Concept2’s long history in the sport of rowing has set an unrivaled standard which any legitimate sport like HYROX ultimately needs.”
With no finishing time restriction, and no qualification required to enter, HYROX welcomes every participant. Indeed, over 98% of HYROX athletes complete their race. Also, there is no specific training program an athlete must follow to participate and be successful.
Racers wear a timing chip so individual times are recorded—this gives the ability to compare your time through a global ranking on the HYROX website. The top finishers in each age group have the opportunity to compete in the HYROX World Championships—in 2024 the champs will be in Nice, France, June 7-9.
Originating in Germany in 2017, HYROX events are now held in over 40 locations across the globe. In 2023, over 125,000 people competed in HYROX events around the world, with really impressive participation levels in Europe, where it’s easier to travel between races.
Here in the US, we’re looking forward to HYROX Miami on February 24, 2024, where we’ll meeting athletes and spectators, providing information about the RowErg and the SkiErg and offering technique tips. There will be some fun giveaways, too!
