Nancy Peck Cook Wins Gold

Nancy Peck Cook describes herself as a jack of all trades and in her 60 years on this planet, Nancy has fit plenty of living in.

As well as a wide-ranging career which has led her to become an entrepreneur, Nancy has a broad sporting background. It began with basketball and skiing and went through to triathlons and marathons. She’s chalked up 36 marathons, four ironman triathlons and two 50 milers.

Then she discovered indoor rowing.

On her 51st birthday Nancy bought herself an indoor rower. Initially it collected dust. Then the Covid pandemic forced Nancy to limit her outdoor activities. She pulled the rower out of her basement and tried to figure out how to use it. Nancy went online and got stuck on Dark Horse Rowing workouts with Shane Farmer and following indoor rowing expert Eric Murray. She also found Concept2’s community Facebook page. An avid competitor Nancy started comparing her workouts and times.

“I got fueled by the community and all the things people were doing. It’s really cool to be motivated by a virtual audience. I’m fueled by competition so I was super motivated using the ranking system as a tool and I started beating people.”

Nancy took her new-found love out of the basement and to the live, in-person CRASH-Bs indoor rowing competition in Boston. She finished second in her age group in 2021.

“Next year I wanted to win, so I looked into getting coached and hooked up with Live2Row (a virtual rowing studio based in Florida). I’ve been with them ever since.”

Nancy went on to win at CRASH-Bs and has since gone to the World Rowing Indoor Championships in Toronto where she won gold in the 2k and silver in the 500m. She then went to the Indoor Championships in Prague and won gold again in the 2k.

Every day Nancy trains with Live2Row at 6am but admits sometimes she sleeps in and then jumps in on the 8am class. This consistency has morphed into a row streak. A ‘streak’ is rowing every day for as long as possible and it is one of the many challenges indoor rowers can pursue. The number of days is recorded and accounted for.

“There are a few people I know who are ‘streakers’,” says Nancy. It includes her friend Dan Lynch who is currently more than 1500 days and counting. Nancy has never met Dan in person but she says he is just one example of the incredible support the online rowing community provides.

“Dan motivated me to row every day. My first streak went for a year but ended when I went on a skiing trip to Snowbird and there were no rowing machines.

“I think the hardest part of having a streak is making sure you have the equipment. I now have three Concept2s, one here in my house, one in Stowe and I’ve just bought another one so someone can row with me.”

She’s also got a SkiErg and BikeErg so that she can do the multi-erg challenge through the ErgZone app.

“I did a 50k on the SkiErg once. I done lots on the BikeErg, I love it. But the indoor rower is my go-to.

“People say ‘what about rest days?’ but I choose easy days. I do recovery rows once a week.

Nancy’s first streak went for 372 days and racked up 4 million meters. It included keeping her streak going through a broken wrist (a fall while inline skating), “so I rowed with one arm with encouragement from my coach who said at least I can’t fall off a rowing machine!” But then ended when she went on a skiing trip and couldn’t find an erg to use.

Since then, Nancy has found an erg at Snowbird, so this time she’s been able to go skiing and still keep the streak going.

February 1st, 2025 marked her 1000th day of rowing every day. She achieved this at the 2025 USRowing Indoor National Championships, where she won gold in the 2,000 meters, setting not only an American record, but also a World record. She also won gold in the 500 meter and 1,000 meter disciplines, and a silver on her team relay.

Nancy can’t say enough about the positive impact of indoor rowing.

“I think it’s the healthiest activity you can engage in. You don’t have to have a body of water and you don’t need good weather. Being able to have something that’s consistent in your life that you can always go to. It’s my thing. It fills me and give me energy.

“I can see myself continuing for a very long time. I don’t know how long the streak will last but I’ll keep going as long as I can erg wherever I go.”
