Growing up in a sports-dominated household, it seems inevitable that Marc Stäubli would end up working for Concept2. His original career path looked quite different than joining a rowing company: he was expected to take over the family business—a sports department store—in Horgen, Switzerland, a beautiful town along the south bank of Lake Zurich. Marc has deep roots in Horgen and many Stäublis live here.

To prepare for the family business, Marc left home and started an apprenticeship at a well-known sports department store, Hefti Sport, in Glarus. There, he learned all he needed to know about the sporting goods industry. As life would have it, his father decided to sell the family store before Marc finished his apprenticeship. But with the education he had, Marc easily became a sports equipment manager one of the biggest retail store chains in Switzerland.

After four years in retail, Concept2 approached him regarding a position. Marc had known the General Manager at the time, Sandro Wehrli, since he was young, but he hadn’t seen him in a long time. Marc wasn’t familiar with Concept2’s informal culture and he greeted Sandro with “Grüezi Herr Wehrli” which translates to “Greetings Dear Mr. Wehrli”. Sandro immediately scolded him, “You’re in trouble with me if you ever greet me again like that again!” Other than that awkward first greeting, Marc’s interview went well and he started working for Concept2 Switzerland as a Field Sales Representative.

Even though sports were a constant in Marc’s life, he wasn’t familiar with rowing. For over 25 years, Marc has played handball, a sport not very well-known in the US but relatively popular in mainland Europe. Marc has played competitively with the Handball Club Horgen, the second highest national league in Switzerland, for over ten years. He also stays active playing tennis, doing CrossFit, fishing, snowboarding and playing darts.

At Concept2, Marc started out by visiting fitness chains to promote our products.

Nowadays, you’ll find him in the showroom and office in Samstagern keeping the small Concept2 Swiss office up and running.
