Tokyo 2020

Concept2 had a tremendously successful 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Our oars and sculls were used by 93% of the rowers, and 97% of rowing medals were won with Concept2 equipment.

Regatta Service

Concept2 travels to several regattas each year to provide repairs and maintenance for oars and sculls. This service is provided free for all customers of Concept2 products and is just one way we help support our customers long after the sale.

Over 45 Years of Design and Innovation
1976
The First Step

The first blades were based on the traditional wood “Macon” oar blades of the day. Our innovation was to produce the blades with composite materials reducing weight and adding durability.

1977
World Championships Debut

Orders substantially increase throughout the 1980s after the US pair of Anne Warner and Anita DeFrantz use Concept2 oars in the 1977 World Championships. College crews start using Dreissigacker Racing Oars and experience increases in speed.

1991
Shaking Things Up

The Big Blade is developed at Concept2. This asymmetric hatchet-shaped blade is 1–2% faster than existing designs and prominently used during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

1996
Smooth Moves

The Smoothie blade results from investigating the effects of curvature and tip angle. Speed testing between the new design and the Big Blade indicates a speed advantage with the new blade.

2001
The Vortex Edge

Based on the same principles used in aeronautics, blades with the new Vortex Edge result in increased efficiency during the first part of the drive.

2004
The Next Big Thing

The Fat blade is developed and released. This blade is 2 cm wider, features the Vortex Edge, and requires a shorter overall oar length. Low i sculls with reduced blade weight and lighter shaft also give scullers a new option with an extremely low swing weight. 

2011
The Skinny

The Skinny shaft is developed in collaboration with elite women athletes looking for a softer feel when testing the Fat2 blade. The result is a smaller diameter shaft with reduced wind resistance.

2015
Bantam Sculls

The Bantam sculls are developed and released as a low-cost sculling oar. Bantam sculls incorporate the injection-molded Bantam blade, a durable plastic option that is 10 cm shorter than a Smoothie2 blade.

2019
A New Blade In Town

The Comp blade for scull and sweep is introduced: It combines the best elements of our existing designs to create a lightweight, efficient, stable and competitive blade. The blade is wide like the Fat2, short like the Bantam, and rigged long like the Smoothie2. 

2023
Hitting the Waves

The Skinny Coastal shaft is developed with a significant improvement in durability and minimal impact on weight.
